Welcome Home

After our prolonged stay in the hospital I thought that we should celebrate our return home properly!

And what better way to celebrate than with chocolate cupcakes? So I asked Manucha to make me these cupcakes. They ended being a gift from her to Leonor.
Welcome home baby girl!

E assim o nosso mundo mudou....

There is no doubt that our life can change in a split of a second. For all of us that second happened on the 21st of May, at 10.41 a.m. On that second our daughter Leonor was born. Now we are 6 here at home. Now every single day rushes by. Now waking up happens several times during the night. Now each morning has a taste of happiness that fills my soul!

Some weeks ago, a friend of mine and her family went New York city. I remembered that a while back I had seen a fantastic vintage paper from NYC that would be perfect to make a photo album. But since I couldn't find that paper anymore, I bought this Crumpled city map and I decided to have a go with it. I must confess I wasn't excepting such a great resul but the fact is that the paper is easy to work and the end result is a very modern photo album!

From scraps...

Mas enganei-me!

When I began  working in my sewing this morning it was a beautiful day. I really thought that when I finished I would be able to take some pictures in the garden. But I was wrong! It's raining cats and dogs so I had to settle for my kitchen window.

While I was storing away some fabrics, I discovered several scraps from a Riley Blake fabric colection that used the design from a scrapbook paper line from My Mind's Eye. I made several things with these fabrics but there are always scraps that are left behind!

So I decided to get working and made 3 shopping bags. I don't know for whom or what they are for but I am very happy to not only have some free space in my drawers but also for having something done that, for now, doesn't have a destination!

Last item: check!

This was the last project on my list! I have finally finished it and my list, as well as my baby's room are done. I saw the model for this bag in several stores in Madrid, used in prams or cots and in a room with little storage space another bag is always handy!

Nunca me deixou ficar mal. O segredo?

I remember clearly the day we made this cake recipe for the first time. It was in a cooking book for children from Obélix, the famous "Gaulois" and for everyone it was love at first site. Here at home we call it Titi's Chocolate Cake because it is my youngest sister favorite cake. I do this recipe time and time again in several shapes and sizes and it has never let me down. The secret? Well good butter and good chocolate. If you want to try it, here is the recipe!

Ingredientes/Ingredients
- 200 g de açúcar/200 g of sugar
- 200 g de manteiga/200 g of butter
- 200 g de chocolate para culinária/200 g of dark chocolate
- 5 ovos/5 eggs

Adicione então a farinha envolvendo-a no preparado. Saboreie!

Melt the butter and the chocolate in a bain-marie. Pre-heat the oven at 180ºC. In the meantime separate the egg whites and the yolks to two different bowls. Add the sugar to the yolks and beat well. Add the melted sugar and butter and beat again. Then add the flour involving it carefully. Finally join the egg whites, previously beaten into soft peaks. Pour this mixture into a a greased baking pan, previously greased with butter and bake in the oven for 25 to 30 minutes. Enjoy!

I have always liked bags: paper or fabric ones. So to separate de clothes from the new family member on the way, so that it is easier to see what dress goes with each cardigan or blouse, I made these tags and their matching bags. You can never have enough bags and I am quite sure they will come in handy later. For now they make my hospital baby bag look really pretty!

Para duas irmãs: very country kitsch

Very Kitsch! Espero que elas gostem!

Last saturday I went to a birthday party were a delightful little two year old girl strolled around with an improvised bag! I love making bags, bigger or smaller so I decided to make these two for her and her sister. Very country kitsch I think! Hope they like them!

Pequenos cestos: item #2....check!

This is one of the projects on my list and that I can finally check! I decided to make a step by step instructions of these practical storage baskets. I made these with 10" square fabrics and other one with 12" (on the last photo). For each basket you will need two 10" squares of fabric for the outside, two 10" squares of fabric for the inside and two 10" squares of batting. To make them bigger or smaller just change all of the measurements.

Make a sandwich placing the batting first, then the outside fabric, with the right side of the fabric facing out and then the inside fabric with the right side facing it. Afterwards just sew on one of the sides.

Reforce as costura no princípio e no fim.

Repeat this operation with the other set of fabrics and then, opening them, face the right sides of both rectangles and sew all around them leaving a small opening on the bottom of the inside fabric so that later you can turn your basket around. Backstitch in the beginning and in the end.

Open the four corners and secure them with pins.

Draw a line in each one of the corners at a 2" distance from the outside line. Sew on top of each line, backstitching in the beginning and in the end.

Cut out each one of the corners at a 1/2" distance from de line and turn your work around.
Feche a abertura deixada no tecido interior.

Close the opening left on the inside fabric.
Coloque o tecido interior para dentro e cosa a toda a volta do cesto.

Put the inside fabric inside and sew all around the basket.

Here they are, the big one and the small, ready to go into action with the million things one needs at a baby diaper changing table!

Item #1: check!

The checks on my list are begining to appear! For now the bed cover is ready and in it's place! I love the way the lines cross and make the fabric pattern stand out!

Sampler Quilt III

Here is the quilt ready to receive the outer border. Initially I had thought about making this border 5" large but I decided to make it a little smaller. I believe it will stay more balanced that way. After that I only have to do....one million things to finish it!. I hope I can make it until the end of July so I can offer it to two very special people in my life!

Ready for the machine!

I am definitely a list person. There is no way I can deny it! I don't know if it is because I am always running around or if  I am just afraid I might forget something but the truth is I make lists for everything! And the decoration of my baby's room is no exception. Time is flying by and the list as so few checks! yesterday I finally managed to trace all the lines in the fabric for the crib cover and she is now ready to go into my sewing machine. Will I finish everything in time I wonder? I hope that tomorrow I will have another check on my list!

Sampler quilt II

Prometo!

I don't like to fail a promise so here are the photos of my sampler quilt at the moment. All the blocks have been joined together with the sashing fabric and now I have to join the rows to each other. Tomorrow all the blocks will be joined! Promise!

Scones
225g de Farinha
60 g de Manteiga
1 colher de chá de fermento
30 g de açúcar
7 a 8 colheres de sopa de leite
1 gema de ovo para pincelar

Pré-aquecer o forno a 180ºC.
É essencial usar boa manteiga, faz toda a diferença!

A while back I promised a friend that I would give her my Scones recipe. When I was younger we had a children's cooking book that I don't recall the name that had this recipe. I started baking scones whenever my parents had visits, pursuing the English vein in me I believe!
So, with no more delays, here it goes!

Scones
225g all purpose flour
60 g butter
1 tea spoon of dry yeast
30 g sugar
7 or 8 table spoons milk
1 egg yolk

Pre-heat the oven to 180ºC. Mix the flour and the yeast and then add the butter, cut into small pieces. Knead well. Add the sugar and knead again.  Then add the milk, spoon by spoon. The dough must be fluffy but without sticking to your hands. If necessary add more sugar or more flour.
Knead the dough very well in your kitchen counter and then with your rolling pin roll it in the counter, previously dusted with flour until it is 3 cm high. With a round cutter, cut the dough and put it in an oven tray, covered with a baking sheet. Spread the egg yolk on top of the scones and bake them in the oven for 12 minutes more less. Serve them with jam and butter!
P.S If it doesn't stay right it is not my fault! Use good quality butter, it makes all the difference!
